Does anyone have a recommendation for a rear facing car seat that will fit in the backseat of a Chevy Silverado pickup? My son is 7 months old and has outgrown his detachable car seat.

What can I do next?

Absolutely any seat will fit rear facing in the back of a silverado. By 7 months your child should have enough head control to where they don't need to be as reclined as when they they were newborns. I absolutely do not recommend a comfortsport, they are the earliest outgrown of almost all convertible seats because of their low shell and harness slots and they only go to 30lbs rear facing. When you go carseat shopping take a small measuring tape with you, I use a sewing one. What you want to measure is the seat part of the carseat to the top harness slot and the higher the number the better. No matter what the weight limit is on a seat all forward facing seats are outgrown when the child's shoulders go above the highest slots. Once you measure a couple of seats you'll see what a difference there is. I personally love britax, but the new evenflo advance is nice as is the safety 1st uptown and fisher price safe voyage.

Here is what I did when I was in need of car seats for my children:

K.I.S.S. (Kids in Safe Seats)
Funded by The Toledo Hospital & Toledo Children's Hospital Auxiliary, certified child passenger safety technicians instruct parents on proper selection and installation of child passenger safety seats. Car seats may also be purchased at a reduced cost.

I don't know about fitting in a truck, but the Britax Marathon is a great seat because it will fit a child much longer than others will. It's not cheap, though, (and I'm not positive it goes rear facing) so it depends on your budget. But it sounds like you have a tall baby so you may need to go with the Britax anyway. I have the Britax Roundabout and it definitely goes rear facing and is highly recommended, but my dd grew out of it height wise before she grew out of it weight wise (she is 43" at age 5 and still under 40 lbs), so I wished I had gone with the slightly more expensive one that had higher top slots, because I ended up spending another $100 on a new seat!
There is a website that tells you how different car seats fit in different models of cars, but I don't know the URL anymore. WWW.CAR-SEAT.ORG is a good general site, where you could also do a search by brands for reviews. I originally found the URL for the car models on there. Hope that helps!

We have the Graco ComfortSport Convertible Car Seat & really like it. It has received good ratings, is relatively compact (as far as car seats go) and can be switched from rear to front-facing. It can be used rear-facing for infants up to 30 lbs and can be used forward-facing for children 20 to 40 lbs and up to 40 inches tall. It's pretty well padded as well.

I think it was about $80 at Target.
