Baby Exzema

My 16 month old son has eczema problems. My first two daughters never had a problem with it. However, I was told by his Pediatric Allergist that Eczema and Peanut Allergies go hand-in-hand... which is why he is seeing an allergist because we found out he's allergic to peanuts in November.

Eczema is related to allergies, hereditary, weather, and stress.

His normal pediatrician prescribed me a steroid ointment that we are suppose to use carefully. She also said to let him PRUNE in the bathtub during his baths... then LIBERALLY apply Aquarphor (it's like a Vaseline texture found in the lotions area) while he is still a little damp (pat dry with a towel). Then I put on his pj's right away before anything dries up. Sometimes it's a little "sticky" to put on the pj's but when he wakes up the next morning, all the red patches are usually gone or very little visibility...

I have been dealing with the same thing with my soon to be 11 month old daughter. Her doctor finally diagnosed her with exzema. I have been telling her for months that Emily had it. Instead she had us changing her lotions, bath wash and shampoo. I knew what it was since I have had it all of my life. Exzema is a result of several things.

1)Allergy to something.....food or something they come in contact with
2)Family History.....My mom and I both have it.
3)It's also common for diabetics to have it.....Which I do.

If your child has it due to reason two or three nothing can be done. All you can do is treat it. I have found when I am stressed it flairs up. Also when my daughter or I are sick it flairs up. Your immune system is fighting whatever is going on so it more or less ignores the lesser problem exzema to fight off the other illness. So the exzema gets worse. EX: My daughter just got over her first illness. She was put on antibiotics. Her face got so bad that it bleed. Her body was under stress. I hope this all helps. The best thing to do is have your doctor prescribe an onitment. I found the over the counter creams for exzema do not work. One actually burned my skin. Good luck.

I know dairy products effect exzema. both my children do not drink milk. I switch to soy and I try to limit ice cream, etc.

Hi C.. My 16 month had eczema due to a milk protein allergy. One of the first things that I would try is changing her milk. She may need to be on soy milk, they diagnoised my daughter when she was about 3 months old and since she has not been drinking whole milk or milk based formula she has been fine. I also can also tell you that she does have some break outs the doctor reccomended that I try using Eucerin lotion and hdyrocortizone cream mixed together which will help with the itching.

I have the same problem with our 2 YO. I use the Baby Naturals Exzema cream and vasaline on him. It can be related to laundry detergent from what we have noticed. My husband has it and so does my son. It is seasonal and they only have bad breakouts during the winter months with the dryer, cold air. It is inherited and not something they eat. On laundry detergent, I use Tide Free or Baby All. My pedi told me that All Free and Clear works well also. Don't use any fabric softener or dryer sheets either.

We had the same thing with my third daughter, and still do occasionally (she's two now). When she has a break out, I use Eucerin Moisterizing Cream liberally all over her patches for a week or two and without fail it knocks it right out. Actually I buy the generic Wal Mart version (Equate Dry Skin Cream), and it works wonders. You may want to give it a try! It does take a few days or so to kick in, but really works for us. We also only wash her with the Wal Mart "Equate" version of Cetaphil cleanser. When we switch back to regular baby soap, the eczema comes back almost immediately. Hope this helps!

I had that problem too. My daughter will have these strange rashes pop up for no reason all over her body. At first they said it was just dry skin but it kept getting worse and then they said it was exzema. I haven't noticed it linked to food as much as I have noticed it when the weather changes. I bought this real expensive lotion and I use it on her about every other day to every day. And it has worked wonders... It is called Cetaphil. I don't know what other containers it comes in but the one I have is a 16 oz tub. It is amazing stuff. Try it and let me know what you think...
