Baby Backpack or Sling for TWO!

Does anyone know if a "double" sling or backpack is made? My 19 week old twins have decided they want to be held all the time, which of course is impossible with one, much less TWO! LOL If no one knows of such a product, which single sling/ backpack did you like the best? Thank you so much!

Merry Christmas, and Happy Holidays!

So What Happened?

Thank you Ladies so much for all your responses! I had no idea there were so many different carriers, and has taken me quite some time to research all of them when I get the few moments to my self, so few! LOL I think I decided to try the Maximom, so if a friend is brave enough to help (husband is deploying for a year again), I don't have to buy another to share! I want to say again EVERYONE of you are wonderful taking out the time to help! It means so much! Thanks again!

I don't know of a double sling or back pack but I have seen people using both at the same time. my favorite sling is by far the ones on www.hugofjoy.com. I guess with practice you may be able to carry 2 kids at once with a pair of these.

Hi K.,

I sell the Moby Wraps and have had several moms use them with twins. But, they stop putting them both in around 6 months bacause it does get uncomfortable. They then switch to an Ergo carrier to be worn over the Moby wrap. One child in front and the other in back. This has been one of the more comfortable ways for mothers to wear their children because it balances out the weight front and back. I also have one mother who uses the Moby Wrap to wrap one child on her back and then uses a sling to put the second child on the front. She has an older child around 12 that helps her put the baby on her back in the Moby. This helped her a lot the first month while she developed a technique to get the baby on her back by herself - safely.

There is also a wonderful video called Tummy 2 Tummy that shows you all the different ways to carry your children in all the major styles of natural carriers. It also goes over safety and how to wear your child properly for safety and comfort.

I live in Tualatin and I would be happy to give you some free lessons and pointers if you need.

Good Luck!
A.

Hi K..

Sounds like you have your hands full! I don't believe there is a double carrier, but the carrier I LOVED for both of my boys was the Ergo Carrier. It's so comfortable and holds kids for a wide age range.

Good luck!

I think it's possible for you to wear two slings at the same time, if not for too long, your back will be angry! I would take the girls to a place that lets you try on the slings and see which ones are most comfortable worn at the same time. Or a backpack/ergo and a sling too, experiment at the store! I think I've seen some of the wraps used with twins, google the moby wrap website, they have pictures of the different ways it can be worn. Good luck, and wow-five girls, including twins, you're busy! =) Happy Holidays, how fun!

I know when I was looking at slings, especially making my own, i ran across pictures of people using two slings. One over each shoulder. I would definitely try it out before buying a second sling.

I know that babywearing can be a tricky thing even with just one baby. Here in Eugene we have a babywearing group that meets once a month so you can actually try on different carriers and get expert help in person. You might have a similar group in your area if you check Yahoo groups or Meetup.com, etc. The 'leader' of our group is Catherine, who is an amazing expert in babywearing with all sorts of carriers and situations. You can probably email her with questions at ____@____.com -- she is very nice and helpful. I would definitely ask her advice before buying any particular carrier!

There is also a babywearing website with video instructions and advice at www.thebabywearer.com, and last but not least is the awesome book called "Babywearing" by Maria Blois.

Also, I think you can use backpack type carriers to carry one on your back and one on your front, or you can combine back/front carriers with ring slings, etc. -- thinner cloth carriers like Mei Tai's and Beco's are probably better for double carrying. Good luck!

The maximom carrier is great .. i used it for my twins. You can use it so many different ways. I think you can button up the leg holes and use it as a sling (I never did that) and you can use one on front and one back, or two front forward or backward facing. You can separate them and they work as single carriers for two people (my hubby and I did this a lot too). They are $100 new but I think I'm done with mine and I would be willing to unload mine for much cheaper if you decide that you want one. I remember those days well and they are challenging, but you WILL make it! Congratulations on your twins and happy holidays!

Ok - when I first read this, all I could visualize was, if it were me, how much fun I could have dressing up as a milk maid, getting one of those old, wooden yokes and putting a child in each bucket ;-)! HOPEFULLY, someone knows of a modern alternative for you - if not, try putting one in a baby swing while you hold another and then swapping - I always found an ounce of relief with one colicky baby by using one of those swings for 10-15 min. stretches. I don't know how you can carry two around constantly - one (and she wasn't large) had to be carried ALL the time and it took a toll. I can still remember being hunched over the sink doing dishes with a baby in a backpack...!

So, since I have no real advice for you, I'm going to offer you a gift certificate at my online store. Send me a direct email and I'll set up a code for you.

I thank you and your husband for making sacrifices and serving our country.

Happy Holidays (times FIVE!!),
T. B.

Oh, I guess I should tell you how to get to my store - http://www.maidenus.com.

I used a Moby Wrap until they were 5 months and then switched to using two mei tei carriers. I would tie them both on and then put one on my back and then the other on my front if they didn't want to be in the moby together. The nice thing about these were that I could do it if I was by myself and no one to help out.

You might look into getting a Moby Wrap. I got one and I love it. I still carry my 15 month old in it and he weighs about 30 pounds. On their web site you can see how to carry twins in it. I got my Moby Wrap off ebay, but you can go to mobywrap.com and read more about them. Good luck!

As already state by Debbie L, there is the Maximom Carrier for twins. I looked into getting one for my twins, but never got it. I wish I had! There were so many times that it would have been helpful! Good luck to you with your twins. Mine are almost 18 months now and they are so fun to watch!

I second the suggestion of a wrap style carrier. I have a didymos for a singleton, but I remember reading the story of the woman who started the company, because she needed a way to carry both of her twins (hence the name didymos = twins in greek).
Any wrap style carrier will probably do, they are all very similar. A few brands to look at: Mobywrap, Mayawrap, Storchenwiege, Didymos - and if you are so inclined you may be able to make your own.
I can also imagine a two ring slings to work - though I always found them to be very uncomfortable...even with only one child.
My absolute favorite for a single child is the Ergo, but I have a hard time imagining how you would wear two at the same time.

Good luck.

I don't personally have experience with this yet, but I've seen people use a ring sling to put one babe on front and then another sling or an ergo to put the other babe on back. You might be able to try both babes in a MOBY, but you'll have to ask a salesperson about it before buying to make sure the carrier is suited to carry both of them.

I used the moby wrap with my single child and I loved it. I have also seen pictures of it used with twins. There's no reason you couldn't carry twins around if you're in shape. I carried my son in a mai-tai carrier quite often until he was 3.5 and I'm sure he weighed more than your twins together. Good luck, twins need to be carried and touched a lot too. :)
