We're having our family picture next weekend and my 2 week old is starting to get his baby acne. I wouldn't be concerned about a little acne, but my first son had it covering his whole head, neck and top of his chest and back! Does anybody know of a safe product I might be ablt to try to prevent or reduce baby acne?

What can I do next?

I haven't delt with baby acne yet, so I'm no hep there but I do work for a photographer. Most photographers are able to take acne off of photos and don't charge extra. I don't know about places like Sears.

I've used diaper rash ointment (the white stuff) or toothpaste (the white paste not the gel). It's worked great on several different babies I've taken care of over the years.

Don't put anything on it. If you try to put lotions on it it will make it worse, red and irritated. Baby acne is from moms hormones and its nothing you can 'clear up' but rubbing anything on it. Make sure his face stays clean and dry, and it will go away in time.

As for pictures, go somewhere that has digital enhancements so they can remove the acne from his face. Black and white, and sepia tone, also hides most blemishes. But I wouldn't worry about it too much, he's a newborn.

My doctor told me to put a small amount of head and shoulders shampoo (the regular kind) in my hand and dilute it with water then wash the babies head with it. They say that the acne stems from the head. I tried it and it worked. Be very careful not to get it in the babies eyes. I did this with every other bath plus stopped using the baby soaps and lotions with perfume in them. I had no use for the harmful acne creams. Hope this works for you.

I don't know where your having your picture taken at but ask or try and get something like soft focus or diffusion it's like a filter or something some companies do digitally to soften the photograph. I love the way it looks personally it just makes the picture softer but it hides blemishes, pimples, scars etc. really well. Black and White pictures look better sometimes with skin problems too. Otherwise you take the normal color pictures that are so bright and clear which is nice but every little thing pops out.

My son had baby acne on his cheeks pretty bad for about 2 months. I found I could keep it under control if I made sure to wash his face with a washclothe and warm water after every feeding. When I was diligant about face washing it did clear up for the most part. Good Luck!!

My baby had baby acne as well on his cheeks. Unfortunately, there isn't much you can do to prevent it (apparently it's leftover hormones from you that is giving him the acne) but we used Cortisone to control it and help it clear faster. It may not clear by the time you have your pictures done. Check with your photographer; you may be able to get them digitally touched up to remove it.

I used Cortisone 10 with my first daughter and it worked really well, her acne went away pretty quickly. I'm not sure what happened, but #2 never got it so I don't know if it works for every baby. Good luck!

We had the same problem with our daughter about that time. Her doctor said it was because of dry skin, as well as those left over hormones. She suggested hydrocortozone (sp?) 10 and Eucerin lotion. It cleared up in about 2 days.

AVEENO!!! It was a life saver for us! My little girl also developed the baby acne that the doctor advised to "let run it's course". But her little cheecks broke out so bad and it just looked terrible, so on the advice of many, I bought the Aveeno body wash and the aveeno baby lotion/ cream. I wash her face morning and night and apply the cream afterwards. It cleared her face up in 5 days!! It's expensive but SO worth it. And if your son spits up alot like my daughter did, I put the diaper cream on her chin to keep the moisture from making that area break out. Hope this helps!

We had the same problem with our 3 month old. I tried a few of the things that others suggested, but when I would use the soaps and other products it made it worse. SO I did what Robin F. did washing his face with just warm water and it got better and now he has that perfect baby soft skin everyone loves.
