When I was growing up, we used to do the same decorations or handprints year after year, either in girl scouts or school. Anyways, it was where you would make some type of mixture (maybe there was flour, water & salt in it), but anyways, we would either cut out the mixture with cookie cutters or put our handprint in it, and then we would bake it, and then paint it. Any idea of what that might be or if you have the recipe, that would be GREAT!!!!

So What Happened?

So, I used a recipe that had 4 cups flour, 1 cup salt, and 1-1/2 cups of water. The first batch came out great, but it was a little gritty. The second batch, not so good. I added a little water to the mixture so it wouldn't be so hard. BAD idea. They never dried!!! Anyways, thank you sooo much!!!!! I am saving all of these recipes, and I am going to try them again. (Valentines Day & Easter are just around the corner!!!) Once again, thank you so very much for all of your help.

i think this might be what your talking about, i found it on a kids art website.

BAKING CLAY

1 cup salt
1 1/2 cups warm water
4 cups all purpose flour

Stir the salt into the warm water. Let cool. Add flour and knead for 8-10 minutes. For colouring the dough, add food colouring or powdered tempera paint to the salt and water - before adding the flour. Create figures and bake at 325 degrees F for 30 minutes to one hour (until all the moisture is gone). Paint creations when cool. You can also seal the complete work with a non-toxic water-based sealer.

Hi K.,
We did bread dough ornaments for x-mas this year, simple recipe.
1 cup of salt 4 cups of flour, 1 1/2 cups of water mix well,
if you want to do colored dough it is easier if you mix the color in the water 1st. another recipe is w/ corn starch and baking soda but you have to cook it and it is a bit mess but makes a finer dough (not so grainy) here is the site for that recipe http://www.recipezaar.com/200801
one note make sure the ornments are very dry before you varnish or seal them or they will get soft and ruin the finish LOL i figured that out the hard way.
Have a great holiday!

This is a recipe for playdough, but it might work for you if you let it dry out after the kids make their hand prints in it...I like to add a touch of vanilla to mine when they're just gonna use it for playing with to give it a better smell, but it's not necessary...and you only need a little bit

Play Dough - Mix 2 cups flour, 1 cup salt, 4 teaspoons cream of tartar, 2 cups water, 2 tablespoons salad oil and food coloring. Stir ingredients together, then cook in a saucepan over medium heat until dough follows spoon and leaves the side of the pan. Cool and knead. Store in airtight container.

Hey K., I was looking for some fun crafts for my daughter and I read the part that tells about "you". Any way, I have a 7 year old daughter and a daughter who will be 3 in February. I too have been married to my wonderful husband for almost 4 years. I am alos going to school again to get my AA to become a cota(certified occupational therapy assistant). I think that out lives are very similar. My husband is not in the service but he does work long hours. Pretty cool, write me back some time and we'll chat!
