My son was just given the green flag to try cow's milk. He will sip a little bit from the cup but will not really drink much. I need advise and tips on how to make this transition from breast milk to cow's milk.

What can I do next?

You might try warming it up in the microwave. If that alone doesn't work then add just a tiny bit of chocolate milk mix.

I started replacing one ounce of breast milk with one ounce of organic milk (Horizon-it really does taste better!) until it was full milk. I changed the amounts every 4 days. I also warmed it enough to take the chill off. If it is an issue with the sippy cup, I used the Nuby sippy cups that have the big soft spout (97 cents at Walmart!). My 22 month old still drinks his milk from that even though he uses a sippy cup or cup and straw for juice.

Good luck

I had the same issue with my son who was also fully dedicated to breast milk. I finally bought some Yo Baby drinkable yogurt (It is all natural and organic.) in the banana flavor and mixed 1/2 a cup of Yo Baby with 1/2 a cup of whole milk. At the time bananas were his favorite fruit, so he drank the entire cup without hesitation. Then, overtime, I gradually decreased the amount of Yo Baby and increased the amount of whole milk. I'm pretty sure you can buy Yo Baby at most grocery stores, including Super Target, and it is either with the organic/natural dairy products or with the yogurt section. Good luck!

I had the same problem with my daughter who is now 14 months. She would never drink milk out of a sippy cup. I finally tried letting her sip it out of a real cup and she would drink it that way. It was really messy and I had to hold the cup for her, but at least she was drinking some. About a week ago, I finally decided to try the sippy cup again. My doctor said to only offer her milk for a few days (no water) and that she would eventually drink it, so I tried that again (I had tried before, but she really wasn't drinking much and I got concerned so I ended up caving in and giving her water in her sippy again). This time though, it worked. I gave her only milk for about 2-3 days and now she is fine. She drinks milk with her meals and water all other times. She still doesn't drink a lot of milk. I'm lucky if I can get her to drink 8-12 ounces per day, but it's better than nothing I guess. I'm still working on it, so don't give up. He will drink it eventually.

Also, at the beginning when she first started on whole milk, I mixed half formula and half milk (she had weaned herself from breastfeeding at about 10 months). I would imagine you could try the same with some pumped breast milk and see what happens. You can just keep reducing the amount of breast milk you mix in a little at a time.

With my daughters, I started taking out an ounce of their formula & adding an ounce of milk. I left it that way for a week. The next week, I used two ounces of milk. So on & so forth until it was all milk. That seemed to work the best for them.

Hey P. I have a sister that is a nurse and boy is she always helping me with my two boys. The transition is easy for some but SO hard for others. But it's so important that they get the fat that is in the milk. Make sure you are giving him whole Vitamin D milk. She also said try milk with breastmilk in it until you completely eliminate the breatmilk from the bottles. My son would only take milk bottles if they were warmed. Good luck with your battle I know it can be frusterating. Do not give up though just keep offering it and eventually your baby will take it.

Warm it up. I am still having to do that for my son. It works wonders. You may also want to try an organic milk. I know a couple of moms who swear by it, particularly the Horizon brand. They say their kids like that so much more than regular. You could also try Soy milk.

P.,

If your son is use to formula mix 1/2 milk 1/2 formula until he gets use to the milk taste.

I was in the same spot as Angie - my daughter wanted nothing to do with it but loved cheese and yogurt and so forth so she was getting a lot of calcium that way at first. That and I would give her juice fortified with calcium as well. Then when I was drinking milk she always wanted a sip and then I found out that she hated whole milk but had no problem drinking 2%. At first she wouldn't drink much unless she was sharing with me but then she got to where she would ask for it at least once a day in her sippy cup. I guess it must be an aquired taste, exp yucky whole milk. :)

Hi P.,
Don't worry too much about the milk. Some kids never drink it- that is ok. What you need to make sure of is that he gets his calcium. At this age he needs between 500-800mg/day.
Some great calcium sources include Calcium enriched OJ, Calcium enriched waffles, cheese, Mac and cheese, Iron Kids bread (sandwich, toast, grilled cheese, french toast...)and yogurt or smoothies.

I would keep offering him milk at meals, even some chocolate milk is ok sometimes, but don't make a big deal of it.

Have fun,
D.

try giving him the milk warmed a little bit, with just a hint of brown sugar to sweeten it. after a few days of that i put less and less brown sugar in my sons milk until there was none, but still kept giving it to him warmed a bit. i kept giving it to him warmed for a while until i switched it one day on him, he looked at me like i was crazy at first...lol...but eventually he got over it.

It might help to think of cow's milk differently - it's not really "replacing" breastmilk. More like it's another new food to add to his menu. No need to stop breastfeeding and as others have said, there is no minimum amount of cow's milk per day your baby needs to be healthy (esp. if you are still breastfeeding) - the fats and calcium are great but they can be found in other food too!

If you are going from formula to cow's milk, that's a different story, but breastmilk continues to offer great nutrition along with other healthy foods.

my 17 month old daughter did the same thing. i had used up all of breast milk i had, so i couldn't mix it in (i plan to do that next time). i just kept offering it to her and she gradually decided that she liked it. and, like someone else already stated, milk isn't necessary as long as your baby is getting calcium from other sources. my daughter's doctor wasn't worried so i decided i wouldn't worry about it either. she loves milk now :)

The thing that worked best for me was to purchase a new "type" of cup. At one they don't really get all the characters, but having a new kind of cup was exciting. We also ditched the bottle at this stage. It took about a day for him to get over the idea and a week to stop trying to "steal" other kids bottles.

I started by mixing formula and cow's milk together. And just added a little more and a little more of the cow's milk over a period of time.

Try warming it a bit, just enough to knock the chill off. It may be the temperature he doesn't like.

Just keep giving it to him. He'll eventually drink it. He may go a day or two without drinking much, but don't try to substitute with juice or something. If you give him anything else, give him water. As long as he's eating he won't get dehydrated from going a couple days without drinking much.

Have you tried it at a different temp? Breastmilk is body temperature so I might try giving him room temperature milk. Don't microwave the milk, it loses it's nutritional value. Try putting in warm or hot water for a few minutes then check the temp.
He may not like the milk because it's cold.

My daughter is now about to turn 5 and I never was successful at getting her to drink milk. She has been to 2 different pediatricians and neither was concerned. She loves yogurt, cheese and other sources of calcium. When she was younger and needed the fat of whole milk, we just gave her the yobaby yogurt.

start mixing the two with mostly breast at first transitioning a little at a time over a few weeks to 100% from the cow. also makse sure it is as close to the same temp as your milk as possible, not too hot, not too cold.

Hi my child has just turned one year and she has gotten the go on drinking cows milk. My doc recommened tring a little at a time and mixing the milk with her formula.

For example the first day I gave her 1oz, second day 2oz and so on...

It seems to be working fine and slowly we will wean her off the milk all together. The key is to slowly introduce the milk and not force them..

Good luck oh by the way it is always good to give organic brand milk.
