Acai Berry Questions

Has anyone tried any acai berry products? Have you had success with weight loss, energy boosting, and other things it claims to do? Do you think the benefits are different with juice as opposed to a pill? Are there any side effects? Note: I have recently been diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue syndrome. I am taking medication and doing some other things that are helping, but I have heard some good things about acai and wondered if it would help me feel even better. Weight loss is not my main goal, but i wouldn't be upset if I did shed some pounds in the process.

What can I do next?

Hi A.,
Chronic fatigue is multi-faceted. It is caused by oxidative stress (which comes from all kinds of things). I have friends who have done very well by taking a high quality pharmaceutical-grade supplement (Usana), avoiding sugar and high glycemic foods (blood sugar spikes cause flare-ups), and starting on a VERY mild exercise program (i.e. begin walking maybe 5 min. and work up slowly - DON'T DO THIS EVERY DAY - BEGIN with an every other day routine.)
If you need help with low glycemic load food lists, let me know.
Developing a healthy lifestyle vs. drinking a juice will do a world of good.
Good luck. N.

A., I was this high energy person that was totally washed out after my first pregancy - and three years later - still wiped out! LONG story short - I learned the need for healthier diet and taking supplements...however...the fatigue and need to take a nap daily (every single day!!) still did not leave me; before and after naps, I did feel much better. I learned in those days that not all vitamins are created equal - so I was taking *high quality* vitamins.

When a friend told me about Melaleuca, Inc. - The Wellness Company - I was so willing to try their products...absolutely loved them...but refused to try their vitamins...didn't want to rock the boat. Finally, I was talked into trying them for one month...knowing it was money back quaranteed. I set aside the $120 a month worth of supplements I was taking...took their $20 pak with the intention of going back to what I *knew* was good in one month. The energy level change was so drastic - I got sceptical that there was an artifical stimulant in the Melaleuca vitamin...as is in some of these juice drinks. Did my homework, took what I learned to my doctor who confirmed that the solubility, availabilty of the nutrients was the reason I was helped so much. After 18 years of naps...I was so grateful to find a lasting solution - and look at the money I saved.

All that to say - Melaleua has solid research on their solubility/availibility compared against other top brands...and instead of the normal less than 10% you get with those companies...you can count on high 75%, 80% or 90% usage. That makes a huge difference in everything!

I yearn for others to learn that money is being spent on products that are just not quality enough to do what they are buying them for... $120 a month and 18 years of daily naps gone...and for the last 17 years...my energy has been great for $20 a month. A few others things got fixed, too.

Hi A.,

Acai berry products, if high quality, are incredible antioxidants. Weight loss and energy boosting comes from good nutrition and an abundance of antioxidants and the absence of free radicals. My husband has lost 130 pounds in the last 3 years and has not put any of it back on. I put him on an absorbable multivitamin that includes a mineral complex that does not create free radicals (most minerals do if not from pure food) and added fiber to his diet to cleanse the toxins from his digestive system. He did not change his activity level until he had actually lost 60 pounds. It is AMAZING what "really GETTING nutrition that actually absorbs in your system" will do!

I have also helped his best friend lose 50 pounds, my sister-in-law lose 25 and quite a few other friends with just a little "good" information and a suggestion of a few products, like particular vitamins and fiber, that I know work. Acai will definitely help but don't look for that one miracle because your body is too, too complex for that.

God bless and good luck,

M.

I take a liquid version from GNC and haven't had any luck losing weight, but it does give me a nice energy boost in the morning...more than coffee and you only take a tablespoon! I feel better. Many people are concerned about the amount of sugar in it, however, they don't realize that is all natural sugar from the fruit, so don't shy away from it because of that. I highly recommend you at least try it. If you take it for a few months and don't see a difference, you can always stop.

Whole Foods sells the Genesis Brand of Acai Berry Juice for $22 (16 oz) and $42 for (32 oz). You consume one ounce per day so the 32 oz bottle would last you a month. I bought it, and I detest the taste of it so I am not a success story. I do know that it is important to take the unadulterated pure form, to get it from a reputable company who processes it within 24 hours of berry picking, and that the capsules tend not to provide the punch that the juice does. If you read the fine print on some of the online websites, when you get the 'free' initial supply, you are signing up for a membership that runs $50 -$80 per month, so I think that's a less desirable route. The rep at Whole Foods said that the capsules provide 500 -100 mg per capsule and to be effective you should consume 25,000 mg per day, thus you really need the juice. I am not a fan of the Monavie line because of its pyramid structure, and I feel if there is that much 'wealth' to be shared, the product itself must be overpriced. Good luck.

I have tried one acai berry product, which was monavie. It is kind of expensive, I only tried it because my in-laws were in a program selling it.(But you can just buy it online and not participate in the selling program). This specific product does not help with weight-loss, but is packed with anti-oxidants, vitamins, amino acids, and 19 fruits and does boost energy. We (my husband, in-laws, and I) were all drinking one ounce in the morning, and one ounce at night, just a shot glass twice a day did the trick. My husband and I were in a pretty bad car accident, and had terrible cuts and scrapes all over our faces. We continued to drink the 2 ounces each day, and I must say ALL of our bruises, and scrapes were gone in LESS than 3 days!! It was amazing. We still drink it everyday, and we feel refreshed and never get colds or any type of sickness! I love it, and if you become a member, I think it is definitely worth the price! And tastes great. They also have 2 newer versions, "pulse" for your cardiovascular system, and "active" with added glucose. I think the original is the best. Here's the website to order: https://mymonavie.com/orderingmonavie/shop.asp

And here's the corporate website, with all the information about the drink itself: http://www.monavie.com/Web/US/en/index.dhtml?r=1

It's a berry like cranberry's. Drink some fruit juice with breakfast and get the same benefits. The claims are unfounded.

Sometimes pills are better.

Vitamin D deficiency causes lots of problems including CFS and depression. Read up and know that D3 suppliments are cheap and available at the grocery store. There is a national epidemic going on and we should all be taking the suppliment.

A., I had found a blog online that people had ordered the supplements and then posted their results. Some said they lost about 6 pounds the first week and then nothing...I think they are a great idea for boosting your immune system but as for weight loss...only the good old fashion, "burn more calories and put in less" is the only way to really win. I've tried so many supplements and the only one that worked was ephedra...we all know the dangers of that one! Will not use it again! My heart is too precious. Focus on getting healthy with your diet and exercise and the rest will "fall" into the right places!! Good luck!

I wanted to address your chronic fatigue...

Try boosting your suppliments. Soooo many of us are vit B/Calcium/D/ Magnesium deficient. Everyone would benefit from fish oil.

I have been battling stress related depression & fatigue for some time now. Recently (4 weeks ago?) started taking Vit B complex, Magnesium/potassium/calcium combo, a really good DHA, (Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega) along with my multi vitamin, I feel better than I have in a very long time.

Also, maybe get your iron levels checked.

The magnesium & Fish oil can assist in a little weight loss, too.

It will make you feel better. it probably won't help you lose weight. DON'T get it off the internet, not even the free stuff, they will use your shipping card and start charging your a very high price for stuff tht you don't order. go to GNC or Walgreens. L.

Hi A.,
I have been taking Acai berry capsules from Sambazon, on the web. (google that) It was the cheapest source I found. They are just acai, no fillers or additional things, in the form of a capsule. I take one a day (instead of 2 as suggested). I haven't noticed the huge weight loss, but I have noticed an energy boost (not like the Incredible Hulk mind you). I think the super high level of antioxidants in them may be what the body likes so much. The worth of acai would depend on what your body's biggest need is now to help with the chronic fatigue. Have you had a complete blood panel done to see if you're deficient in a certain area? For instance, I'm anemic, but the blood panel showed my iron is fine. My body needs more folic acid on a regular basis to feel good. So even with the acai antioxidants (which are always good), if I don't get enough folic acid I still won't be my best. I hope you find some relief soon. It stinks to have plans you can't execute because your energy won't cooperate!
