9 Month Old Not Nursing/dehydration

My 9 month old out of no where this morning will not nurse or take a bottle. The last time he nursed was at 10 pm last night. I was able to have him nurse a VERY little this morning but that is it. He has had an on and off temp of 99.4. I called his doc and she said to monitor his diapers. He needs to have 4 wet diapers in 24 hours. He had a bm yesterday and a little one today. He has not had a wet diaper since 7:30am this morning and it is 4pm. I have been giving him a little expressed breastmilk in a syringe ( he hasn't figured out the sippy cup yet) but he will only took about an ounce or so and only one time. Any suggestions? He is fussy on and off. He'll play for a little and then fuss a little. I keep offering the breast or bottle every half hour or so and he just fusses and pushes me away. I gave him tylenol to see if he would eat and that hasn't helped either except to take away the fever but no eating. I am unsure how to give him pedialyte since the syringe is the only way to feed him right now plus it has a ton of fake dye's and preservatives. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Sorry it took me so long to update but I wanted to thank you ladies again for your input! He ended up not getting dehydrated and back to normal nursing within a few days. He had a tooth brake through a few days later and I think that is why he wouldn't nurse. I did everything I could ( syringe feed, etc ) and he kept getting some slightly wet diapers and he was fine. Now he is back to normal. Thanks again!

I don't like pedialyte either. Two things - he's old enough to have some water. If you have a sippy cup, just give it to him - he's got to get the hang of it sometime. He might actually drink quite a bit because this will be new and fun. If you have a straw, even better - they love sucking liquid through a straw and no, he's not too young. For future.... have on hand Vitalyte it can be found at vitalyte.com, running stores, REI. It's all natural. Great electrolyte replacement drink. For now, continue to offer breastmilk but if he's not taking it and not having a wet diaper, anything is better than nothing. If pedialyte is the only thing you can get your hands on, it's better than a trip to the ER. You could also google making your own electrolyte drink, if I recall it's pretty simple. Lastly, don't give Tylenol for a fever unless it's really high (and Dr. recommends it) or if he's miserable and can't sleep. A fever is the body's way of fighting infection.

Hope he's feeling better soon!!

If he isn't taking anything I'd worry there is a pain either in his mouth or throat (thrush or hand, foot and mouth disease) That being said, babies dehydrate very quickly, if he hasn't had those 4 wet diapers I'd head to the ER immediately! Check out this article but I'd be more comfortable having a doc check him out!

Hugs! I hope all turns out!

Ear infection is what it sounds like... if he was without a low grade fever I would have said nursing strike. I'd keep offering the breast or syringe feed breastmilk.

You need to give him at least one to two teaspoons of breastmilk EVERY 15 min literally and keep at it OR you need to take him to the ER now and get him an IV--he will become VERY sick , very fast if you don't do something about it NOW. Don't wait. I would call the ER and tell them you are on your way...be on the safe side. You can give it with a spoon, syringe, medicine dropper whatever---but make sure he gets some fluids Now. Hope everything is ok! Let us know---

Don't stress!!! :) It will make him more resistant. Keep doing what you're doing. Probably teething is causing the temp and resistance to nursing/bottle. Keep offering, more often then he'd need, and keep giving with syringe, 1 oz/hr if that's how he'll do it. Try some water as well.

He needs to see a doc now, dehydration in babies is fast and can be very dangerous. Call the doc at the very least, but I would have already had the baby in the ER to get an IV at the very very least.
