7-Year Old Wearing Makeup

My 7-year old is getting into play makeup and received some Hannah Montana and other play makeup. I let her put it on when she's playing around the house but lately she wants to put the makeup on when we go somewhere.

She puts the eyeshadow stuff on, which has real color in it, the blusher and the lip gloss.

I've told her that she can wear makeup when she's 13, but until then she can only wear lip gloss when we go out in public. She can wear some of the glitter stuff for special occasions only.

Am I being too h*** o* her?

What can I do next?

I'm glad I have boys! This is a tough one, but I think makeup is like dress-up - not for everyday outings.

You are right on Mommy! Girls have so many pressures to grow up fast these days. I have a Brownie Troop of 14 7 and 8 year old girls and the Mom's talk about stuff like that. We all are pretty much on the same page---make up at 7 is a no-go. A little fancy lip gloss or a touch of Mommy's lipstick for a fancy family night or just for fun is fine---otherwise it's no way for make up outside of playing dress up.

Perfect guidance!

Even at 13 years old... some girls wear an amazing amount of make-up - I don't go for that, either.

Great job! Great step-mom!

I agree with the first poster about not giving a "set" time, just in case she gets to 13 and she is not ready (or you are not!) but I think letting her dress-up as much as she wants at home and at friends play-dates is fun.

Maybe you can help her put together a kit of items that she can wear "out". My daughter has a old jewelry box with two flavored Chap Sticks, hand lotion, an emery board for her nails, a comb, and some face lotion. She enjoys spending time getting herself ready using her little kit (I have a make-up kit, but I don't actually wear it normally, but I think girls like to have what moms have.) Hope that helps! You can add nail polish, if that is okay for you. I hate the smell!

Stick to your guns. If you let her get away with this she will know who's boss. Kids always push their way up. One minute its wearing makeup around the house then they try to wear it outside or sneak it out. Or were small hoop earrings then they suddenly get bigger. Or its wearing shoes with a small heel then the heel gets bigger. You see where I am going with this. Another suggestion is not to tell her she can wear makeup at 13 yrs old because when the time comes you may not be ready for that or you may see that she is still to young. I have a 19 yr old (tomorrow is her 19th bday). So I have seen it happen but I always stuck to my instinct & my rules and now she appreciates most of it.

You are not being hard. I totally agree with you!! I might be a little crazy though...i dont like two piece swimsuits!! And my daughter is only two!! Modesty goes a long way!!

I agree with the other post that makeup is like dressup...done at home:)

I don't think you are h*** o* her at all. One of my girls is all girl and she likes the stuff as well. She is only allowed to wear it at home. If we go out, lipgloss only. Sometimes she pouts about it but understands that it is not appropriate all the time. I mainly talk to my girls about proper skin care and hope it sinks in that regardless of any make later, you take good care of your skin.
