My son just turned 3 months and today he was at the doctor and he weighted in at 18.7 pounds. At his last visit last month, he was 14.10 pounds. His doctor said we should start him on rice cereal but I'm not sure if I should mix it with water or breast milk or formula. I have just been breastfeeding him on demand since he was born. He's almost as big weight wise as his 3 year old sister. All he wants to do is nurse. He was only 7.2 when he was born (in a wheelchair).

What can I do next?

Hi
My son was born at 9 pounds but by 6 months was 25 pounds. He was exclusively breastfed. I started him on cereal at 5 1/2 months and I mixed it with breast milk. When I didn't have time to pump, I used water. By the way, once he started walking, he thinned out.

I would hold off the on cereal for at least another month. Just because he's big doesn't mean his digestive system is mature enough to handle cereal yet. Does he nurse because he's hungry or because that's his comfort thing? My first daughter constantly nursed...I was her soother! But my second daughter only nurses when hungry. And I'm sure your little guy will get to more average weight once he starts walking. I knew a little guy that was so fat his legs wouldn't close together and his arms literally stuck out from his body!! Today he's a perfectly normal-sized 11 year old. But you should probably encourage activity for him. Lay his on his belly so he uses his neck muscles and on his side to encourage rolling. But again, I wouldn't worry too much and I wouldn't rush the feedings either.

Don't worry F.. My 3 yr old was 6lbs 12 oz at birth and by the time she was 1 1/2 yrs old, she wore a 4T (32 lbs). She was in the 125th percentile for weight (off the charts). As soon as she began to walk, the weight dropped right off. Now at 3, she's 33 lbs and in a size 3T.
P.S. She too had the rice cereal mixed with breast milk.

When my son started cereals i mixeed it with his formula. Since your son has been drinking breast milk, mix it with that. My son had to have cereal with all feedings due to acid reflux. When i started him on baby food he didnt seem to want the milk with cereal any more so i went back to plain formula and only gives fim the cereal bottle if he awakes in the middle of the night. My son will be 8 months next week. He is 17 lbs. He was a preemie and weighted just 2 lbs at birth.
