2 YO Son with 103 Fever, Flu, Stuffed Nose -- Skin Very Red Under Nose

Hi Momma, A no brainer again for many of you. My 2 YO son has sensitive skin to begin with so I always put lotion on etc. For the first time that he is sick, the skin under his nose and above his mouth is very red. Even though I put cream on it. We were out in the winter sun for 10-15 minutes only today (the rest of the time in the shade). Should I be concerned about the redness or is it normal? Any tips?

Please nothing judgemental.

Thank you.

Jilly

So What Happened?

Addendum: We did go to the dr. today. He said it is viral, so we just have to take children's tylenol etc. and keep him comfortable

My son gets a lot of colds, runny noses, etc.
Three things that help (a LOT):
1. Boogie Wipes
2. Puffs with lotion
3. At night, I go into his room and slather his upper lip area with Aquaphor. Clears it up by morning.

have to ask, if he's running 103 fever and flu symptoms, why is he out in the winter ANYTHING? shouldn't he be in bed watching movies or cartoons all day resting?

any time it's flu or cold, there's really no cure for it-nothing a dr can do, when my daughter has the flu, i don't even bother with dr, unless school HAS to have something for excused absense-waste of time and money, will just tell you what you already know and send you on your merry way. just have to help the immune system work...keep him on fluids, i alternate 7up, gatorade, water sprite (no dark colored drinks) for my daughter, she can eat when/how much she feels like it and keep rotating the motrin and tylenol every 2 hours to help the fever stay controlled

I feel it may be allergies. Check with your local health food store for recommendations for a saliva test. (I can recommend a doctor in Ft Lauderdale)
Blood and needle tests are traumatic testing methods. Check the contents of the cream you are applying; and check the house for allergens like feather pillows, wool blankets, mold, pets, air filters, etc. Also, the allergy test will show negative reactions to foods - like wheat, gluten, sugar, certain fruits and vegetables.
We live in a toxic world; but knowing how to keep our immune system in top shape will make for a happier life.
Best wishes, S.

I'd say normal normal normal. If he's been fighting a cold especially. The snot is running down his little face to his lip & being damp and cold (even your Florida cold) it will get super red. If his nose isn't running then he may be licking his upper lip. I would put some good chapstick on it. Even the skin above his lip. Especially if little guy has sensitive skin. It will create a nice barrier & protect his face. :) Good luck & have fun!

The red skin under his nose is most likely due to being sick, maybe from wiping a runny nose and getting chapped from the dryness of winter. Put carmex or vaseline on it and it should help.

In any case, try and keep that fever down. Definitely keep him home and inside so he can rest and stay hydrated, and especially so he will not spread the flu to others.

Have a humidifier in his room, give him lots of clear fluids, infant Tylenol.

Also, how did you take his temperature? Unless it was done anally, his temperature is actually 104, so you definitely need to check in with his doctor for advice on meds usage, though his flu will have to run it's course.

This is normal. We use blistex for that, but if he is sensitive, it may burn. Use the puffs with lotion, they are better.

Please keep him home if he has a virus, maybe you were just out in your back yard or on your way to the doctor, but please, stay out of public places! He will heal faster if he rests, but not all children will lay down and be still, so I understand the temptation, but if he has sensitive skin anyway, it would be better to keep him hydrated and stay in, bettter for him, and better for everybody else too!

hi - not sure if you are dealing with chapped skin from a cold but....my LO has super sensitive skin and we found baby wipes to be a major contributor to redness....even the sensitive ones. clean area with tepid water, pat dry and coat with petroleaum jelly/ aquaphor. if we are still in the fingers in the mouth stage...save the coating for nap/sleep time. good luck!

It's normal, from the wiping and the rubbing and the cold, dry air doesn't help. It is a good idea to go out for some fresh air. Continue to moisturize the area, perhaps using aquafor or Eucerin. Those are better for serious dry skin and is safe in case he licks a little. He might need lotion several times a day. My son went through the same thing at that same age.

This is pretty normal, especially when dealing with runny noses! My daughter gets it too, and on her cheeks. I just slather vaseline on every night before bed and it works. It takes a few days to look better and if he'll let you put it on more than that, do it. Sometimes I just use regular chapstick during the day and rub it on her face b/c she doesn't like the vaseline, but chapstick seems fancier! ;)

Hi,
What is he eating? Possible he isn't getting enough essential fatty acids.
Weston Price is a great reference.

For his red skin try chapstick. I use medicated chapstick on mine and it does wonders, but since he is so little the medicated stuff might burn a bit for him.
