Hi, I was wondering if anyone could tell me how to get my 13 month old daughter to stop biting. Nothing seems to provoke her, she just comes up and bites. She mostly does it when she gets really tired, but its beginning to hurt out nightime routine. I have tried pinching her nose, moving her away from me and saying no. Any other suggestions would be helpful.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I have tried everything, and finally with putting her in her crib for a minute after her biting she has gotten better. She still tries every now and then but the behavior is getting better. Thank you to everyone for your help.

i never bit my biter babe. i don't know how to explain to such a young child that it's ok for mami to bite you but not ok for you to bite your sister.
she would bite constantly ever since she started getting teeth. she'd get time out if she bit her sister.
around the 2 year old birthday she got tired of timeouts due to biting and she stopped biting.
good luck

HI S. I HAVE FOUR CHILDREN AND I HAVE BEEN IN THE DAYCARE FIELD FOR OVER 13 YEARS. UNFORTUNATELY THIS IS A STAGE SOME CHILDREN GO THROUGH. I HAVE SEEN MANY PARENTS TRY DIFFERENT PUNISHMENTS. MY SUGGESTION TO YOU IS BE CONSISTENT. I WOULD DO TIME OUT EVERYTIME SHE BITES AT SOME POINT SHE IS GOING TO STOP BITING BECAUSE SHE WONT LIKE IMEOUT. SHE ONLY SITS FOR A MINUTE THOUGH BEAUSE SHE IS ONLY 13 MONTHS. DONT WORRY SWEETIE IT WILL PASS. SHE WILL MOVE ON TO BIGGER AND BETTER THINGS. GOOD LUCK STEPH

hello S.,
I know that many moms would disagree with me, but when my daughter was about 12 months old she started to do this to me and my husband, and when had tried everything, finally i decided to bite her back, not hard just hard enough for her to feel something, but before i bit her i told her the first time that i was going to do it, belive it or not our childern do understand a lot more then what we think that they understand, i gave her a warning first and then when she did it again i said not didn't mommy just tell you that she is going to bite you , and she gave a nod, and i bit her, she didn't like it, but i only had to do it to her twice and she never bit anyone again!! Hope this helps

Maybe she is teething and her mouth is sore. Maybe you can try offering her a teething ring or something eles she can chew. I hope this helps. Let us know how she is doing.

I did this with my daughter and it worked. It didnt work with my son though so you may want to try it. Whenever she bites you(as soon as she does it) tell her biting hurts and its not nice then take the wrist of her hand and and gently but with enough pressure, for her to feel it, put her wrist into her upper teeth. And tell her this is what it feels like when you bite mommy. It may sound cruel but it worked with my daughter and doing that once she never bite again. I got this idea from either "The baby book" or "displining your Child" both books are from Dr. Sears. "The baby book" was my baby bible. I still use it becuase it has a great section on First aide. I used this book so much that I ruined the binding of the book. LOL. It didnt work with my son becuase my son thought it was funny. He eventually stopped biting on his own.

Gotta do time-out in the corner with a stern "no biting Mommy." (one minute for each year of age in the corner) and stick to your guns!

Hi S.! Let me tell you what my husband always did, and only had to do it once or twice with each child. When Caelan comes up to bite, put your hand in her mouth, flat. Then push it toward the back of her mouth so it pulls her lips over her teeth. Very gently! You don't want to hurt her, but if she tries to bite she will hurt herself. This way she will learn that biting hurts and isn't any fun, without you having to punish or hurt her.
