10 Year Old Daughter and Blackheads on Nose and Chin

Can anyone recommend a good skin care product that is safe for my pre-teen daughter who will be 10 this week? She is so young and I don't want any harsh or toxic chemicals on her face. She has dry skin but it appears she is going to be acne/blackhead prone like me. She is tomboyish so I would love to start her on a good hygiene routine now.

Thanks so much!

Where can I find the Aveeno pads? I don't recall ever seeing them before.

Cetaphil worked wonders for my daughter! They have a gentle skin cleanser and a hydrating lotion. It also is not expensive. It worked so well for her, that I began using the lotion myself each morning and it has hydrated my skin as well!!!

I can highly recommend DHC Cleansing Oil, to be used before a regular mild cleansing soad, toner, and moisturizer. The cleansing oil from DHC ( http://www.dhccare.com/DHC/BestSellers.aspx ) truly deep cleans skin, preventing formation of blackheads. I'm 41 and have been using it for about 3 years now. I've noticed a big difference in the clarity of my skin and get fewer blackheads on my nose (the only place I typically got them). The cleansing oil also has some good protective and softening antioxidants and makes the skin feel really soft. You rub it on dry skin at the end of the day and then rinse off with warm water. Again, I'd recommend following with a mild soap cleanser. I don't have any affiliation with DHC...just really like a few of their products. I believe the Cleansing Oil is their best-selling product, so there are many evangelists out there like me!

While I cannot recommend a specific product, also get her in the habit of moisturizing. Washing with a good soap will help with the acne but also can dry the skin. If you skip the moisturizer, the oil glands will work overtime and produce more oil to keep the skin moist which can result in more acne. It would also be a good idea to start talking about skin care and even using a facial moisturizer with an SPF. She won't care now but she'll be happy when she's mid-30s and her skin looks great!

Keep in mind that blackheads are not dirt! It is the oxidation of the oil in the pores which turns black/dark. Exfoliating products should be used minimally because all that abrasive material on the skin can damage the pores.

Biore Pads work great in helping remove them. Nothing abrasive or irritating on the skin. You can get them at any drugstore or supercenter.

I don't really know if you are looking for *acne* care, per se, since she is really just on the cusp of dealing with facial cleansing issues. If you are just looking for a good facial care regime, maybe just start with a good, gentle cleanser with water in the a.m. and p.m.

If it is actually acne/black head care that you are looking for, then read on. I dealt with acne for a good while as an adult, and I have tried many products. I've found that the most effective product, and the most GENTLE, was Proactive. It really did work for me, and was the most gentle, in fact, it actually made my skin feel good and soothed after I used it. I did find that if I used it too frequently, I would get a little reddening of my skin, but nothing compared to some of the other products I used. And if I reduced the frequency of use just a little, I would be fine.

I was just going to ask this about my 8 year old. I think it was our Holiday Diet, but I noticed a few pimples on her cheek yesterday. I was going to try cetaphil (sp?) but wanted to hear other suggestions from Moms of girls this age.

honestly I believe this with all my heart the best thing for her is a washcloth and soap, maybe a Neutrogena soap but scrub her face every morning every night with soap and use a really light moisturizer in the morning. I started my son on this when he was about 10 or 11 he is 14 and acne free

I am a beauty consultant with Mary Kay and we have a really great product line for young skin. It's called Velocity and it's a cleanser and moisturizer set specifically designed for young skin... no anti-aging stuff or anything else kids don't need! Just fresh and simple. I would love to send you samples to check out, or meet with you to let you try it out. It's really inexpensive, too... just right for budgets.

Good luck with whatever product you choose to go with. It is really important to develop good skin care habits early, along with all those other good habits we all need! ;)

Send me a personal message with your address and I'll get you a sample in the mail asap.

Peace.

Have you heard of Perfect Skin? You can google it and their website should come up. It's a 3 step process and it comes with Cleanser, Toner and Moisturizer. The ingredients are very gentle and not super strong. I wouldn't recommend Proactiv b/c I've used it before and it dried out my skin and the chemicals were kinda strong.

I ordered products that were advertised on this site--Ottillie and Lulu. So far my daughter loves the facial wipes and face moisturizer and her skin looks great. I even contacted the maker asking questions about ingredients since my daughter has food allergies, and they were very responsive. www.ottilieandlulu.com

My daughter uses Aveeno cleansing pads - very gentle on the face! I completely agree with MR on getting her to use a moisturizer. My daughter forgets and you can really tell! I'm always reminding her.

Edited to add: I bought them at Target, but I'm sure you can find them at K-Mart, CVS, Walmart, etc. They come in a round container. The pads are moist (the soap is in the pads). This is what the contain looks like:
